Notable Exceptions

A few textiles don’t fall into either the knit or woven category. For example, felt is considered a “nonwoven” fabric. If you examine the surface of felt, you won’t see a grainline or knit loops. Instead, you’ll see a dense tangle of fibers (A). Felt is composed of wool or synthetic fibers that have been fused together rather than knitted or woven. For this reason, felt doesn’t have stretch or a grainline and can be cut in any direction. Most vinyl or plastic textiles also fall into the category of nonwoven because they’re created using other manufacturing processes (B). Another textile that isn’t knit or woven is leather (C). Leather occurs naturally, so it also doesn’t have stretch or a grainline and can be cut in any direction.
